Some said that <a href="https://www.whiterockbeverages.com/">White Rock Beverages</a> makes it, but their website has no information about it at all other than mentioning it on their <a href="https://www.whiterockbeverages.com/find-a-retailer">where-to-buy</a> page. The bottle itself mentions <a href="https://sprecherbrewery.com/">Sprecher</a> which is interesting since they already have a couple of different root beers of their own.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The logo for Olde Brooklyn&#8217;s root beer is nice and old-fashioned. I rather enjoy the colors and the bridge. I don&#8217;t think it will catch your eye while you are walking down the aisle, except perhaps because of its old-fashioned look.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/48617e53-6101-4daf-88f1-587c9e14e928_1976x3747.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6efb8e48-9349-4e3c-8742-73e03c2d2f7e_2639x4032.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/396562dd-b73d-4283-9ac0-f1f441a423cb_3749x1536.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/662d077b-119d-45ca-8df9-740d75f153a4_1884x3276.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Olde Brooklyn Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/73294ad6-bd18-4446-b162-3fc1265178c6_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Old Brooklyn was completely flat when I drank mine, which means no foam and very little carbonation. It reminded me of A&amp;W that had been left in the glass too long. The drink was creamy and tasted good, but it also felt generic and didn&#8217;t stand out.</p><p>Still, I would be happy to drink it again. It may have been flat because it was so close to its expiry date.</p><p>Other reviewers mention the drink as having a fruity odor or taste, but I didn&#8217;t notice that. However, there is yucca extract in this drink, so perhaps you will be able to discern that with your palate.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg" width="1456" height="712" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:712,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1038887,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/195348881?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>In general, this seems like a good root beer. You can find Olipop in Target and many other stores. They are typically packaged in cans. Olipop has several other flavors you can try as well.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The Olipop brand tends to go with an understated set of pastel colors. Olipop also uses plant fibers and botanicals in its drinks.</p><p>The smell of the drink is rather medicinal and the taste is as well. They use Stevia for sweetening, so you will probably notice a diet soda aftertaste.</p><p>Speaking of the taste, it is pretty complex. I originally thought this would be like a flavored seltzer, but it is a true soda, or close to it. However, they have a lot of plants like artichoke, chicory root, cassava root, kudzu root, marshmallow root, Nopal cactus, and Calendula flower, which makes it taste different from any other root beer I have ever had.</p><p>I didn&#8217;t enjoy the flavor much, but it was certainly interesting.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/72fc0d03-cbd4-4108-bb70-cb73f7561463_4032x767.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0232ce2b-b411-4741-8164-50b621124fc6_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Ingredients and nutrition facts&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0cc1bc3e-6f06-472a-b2a9-d35a64cf89d6_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>I don&#8217;t really like prebiotic or probiotic drinks, regardless of whether they claim to taste like root beer or not. The first gulp had a strong flavor, but I wouldn&#8217;t call it root beer. There&#8217;s not really any caramel or licorice and the carbonization is quite low.</p><p>In general, I would call this fairly bland. This is the first root beer I have had that mentions containing &#8220;Root Beer Syrup&#8221;. On the plus side, they use cane sugar at least.</p><p>I do feel like the flavor comes out a bit better if you let it warm up a little rather than drinking it ice cold. When beer was banned, Triple XXX continued to thrive. You can <a href="https://www.triplexxxfamilyrestaurant.com/shop/">purchase</a> Triple XXX in bottles, cans, or as a jelly.</p><p>I got mine from a local Hy-Vee store, but you can also purchase Triple XXX online. According to their website, the three X&#8217;s mean that they are a top-tier product. We will see when we taste test this drink!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>From a branding perspective, they mostly went with red and yellow. I do feel like it is glaring enough to sort of shout out to the casual browser.</p><p>Triple XXX also went with a brown bottle rather than a clear one, which is interesting.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fe0a3545-8b50-40b6-8dcb-1df7efdfabfc_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bc338a50-94f8-4a29-b544-f9c2075c79ad_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1176f4ba-ca45-4128-9326-e318d6e2799d_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/58d77c62-d5cb-4b5c-9746-cdb5c85a0e18_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Triple XXX Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Triple XXX Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c8cf8ed1-ea2f-4fb1-9e18-101ea4539a9b_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first take a swig of Triple XXX Root Beer, you will get a strong flavor profile. While the ingredients don&#8217;t mention licorice or wintergreen, I feel like there is a taste of both in this root beer.</p><p>Personally, I don&#8217;t like licorice much, so this isn&#8217;t my favorite root beer right off the bat. On the other hand, if you keep sipping the drink, that flavor seems to mellow a bit. I don&#8217;t really enjoy the aftertaste, though. It reminds me a lot of a diet drink aftertaste.</p><p>The other thing to note about this drink is how flat it is. In fact, I would say it is one of the flattest root beers I&#8217;ve ever had. It&#8217;s also quite smooth.</p><p>As usual with these smaller root brews, this one is caffeine-free and made with pure sugar cane.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a There is also a Barq&#8217;s red creme soda, French vanilla creme, and a cherry bite version.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Barq&#8217;s branding features a silver can with the Barq&#8217;s logo emblazoned on it. According to Google Gemini, the caffeine content is roughly 22mg per 12 fl oz. However, the fountain version of Barq&#8217;s is often uncaffeinated. </p><p>I personally like the way Barq&#8217;s tastes. It isn&#8217;t smooth and creamy like A&amp;W tends to be. Instead, I would call it a stronger-tasting root beer with more of a rootsy, perhaps licorice, flavor.</p><p>Unfortunately, Barq&#8217;s went with high fructose corn syrup as its primary sweetener.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Allison Ellsworth began exploring alternatives to soda in 2015, creating new drinks in her kitchen that she hoped would be healthier. Eventually, she created &#8220;Mother Beverage&#8221;, a drink based on apple cider vinegar with some flavor infusions that she sold at a local farmer&#8217;s market.</p><p>A rep from World Market tried the drink out and was interested in selling it in their stores. Eventually, she went on Shark Tank and rebranded to Poppi. Amazingly enough, Poppi got popular on TikTok and was sold in stores and on Amazon right out the gate. </p><p>PepsiCo bought out Poppi in May 2025.</p><p>Which brings us to their Root Beer, which is the only drink I really care about since this is a Root Beer review website.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Personally speaking, I find the branding kind of boring. Poppi goes for pastel colors, so they don&#8217;t really stand out as a bright colored drink. On the other hand, since all their drinks have muted tones and a similar look to them, you will be able to recognize them quickly on the shelf.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3e83dcc8-913b-4ea2-8c58-a3dbf2caadbd_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fab84455-30fd-4bd0-93f4-7454eed95a90_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0e49f535-5af8-419f-ac02-0b0c9445464c_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2d7b8256-74c7-46b3-95fd-e6b32334769c_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Poppi Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Poppi Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/db356ca0-5675-430c-8fc3-659d0dd4b525_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Unfortunately, the first time you take a sip of this drink, you will find that it hits you like a gut punch. The flavor is very medicinal, probably due to the apple cider vinegar. On the other hand, you do smell the root beer odor, and there is a definite taste of root beer buried in there. You&#8217;ll also probably note some kind of minty flavor in the background, too.</p><p>Here&#8217;s a full listing of the ingredients for you to peruse:</p><div I haven&#8217;t tried the game or the show, but I did try the Sarsaparilla.</p><p>You see sarsaparilla mentioned in many Western movies and TV shows, but finding the drink can be challenging. It is refreshing to find it so often now, but you still need to search for it. For example, you won&#8217;t likely find any at Wal-Mart or Target. You have to go to a grocery store, and even then, it has to have a specialty drink section.</p><p>Hy-Vee is one of the few grocery stores that seems interested in having a wide variety of speciality sodas. If you have one near you, you can probably find this drink or a different kind of sarsaparilla.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>From a branding point of view, everything I have read says that the drink looks like the one in the show / game. </p><p>The logo and colors look nice. I really liked the cap. However, when you take your first mouthful, it has a medicinal taste. This is definitely not a root beer or normal sarsaparilla flavor. Maybe a cross between Coke and root beer with a more cola flavor. I have seen some commenters call it a cross between root beer and grape soda, but I don&#8217;t really taste any grape.</p><p>You get that medicinal hit right after it enters your mouth, and it lingers as an aftertaste, too. Jackson Hole Soda has around ten sodas in total, including Buckin&#8217; Rootbeer. </p><p>As with many of these lesser known soda manufacturers, it is really difficult to learn anything about them. For some reason, most of these companies do not share how long they have been in business or even which state they are located in. However, the bottle I found was filled in Washington state anyway.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Root Brew Review is a reader-supported publication. It has a kind of four-color look and feel to it using a photograph that is either from antiquity or made to look that way.</p><p>You can see the olde fashioned photo below:</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e106132b-4cff-44ea-b517-cd05e6b28178_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/81bd6cbb-09e1-4c81-928e-5a4cc7f3ea69_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/48f3890a-c58a-4fda-9eca-88b192c867c5_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Snake River Sarsaparilla&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Snake River Sarsaparilla&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/69f6eafc-3b14-49b3-bdeb-7aa18cd057f5_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>This look is reminiscent of <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/3-filberts-old-time-draft-root-beer">Filbert&#8217;s old time root beer</a>, although I would say that Filbert&#8217;s was more colorful than this example.</p><p>You could argue that by using this black-and-white photo, the soda may be more distinctive than its colorful brethren on the shelf. However, when you have a lot of brown bottles of root beer and sarsaparilla all lined up, I&#8217;m not sure that this helps.</p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>The sarsaparilla has a more complex taste than many mainstream root beers. While there is definitely the rootsy flavor you would expect from a root beer, there is a mix of additional flavors too. I wouldn&#8217;t call it licorice or even caramel, though there is definitely a smooth flavor profile.</p><p>Snake River sarsaparilla has a bit of bite, like Barq&#8217;s. Snake River also has more carbonation than A&amp;W or Mug seems to, but doesn&#8217;t seem to be foamy.</p><p>The smell is sweet, with a hint of root beer, but I don&#8217;t think I would necessarily characterize it as a root beer smell.</p><p>If you take a gander at the ingredients for the Sarsaparilla, you will see that it is caffiene free and uses cane sugar. Perhaps the complex taste comes from the quillaia extract? I have never seen that ingredient mentioned in a root beer before anyway.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" According to this <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/cicero-beverage-co-awarded-two-2014-bevstar-awards-for-premium-beverages-275579351.html">review</a>, Cicero is based out of Chicago, IL. When I tried going to Cicero&#8217;s website, however, I was blocked by my ISP as it is listed as a porn site, so they don&#8217;t seem to have their own web presence at the time of writing.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The company has gone with an old-fashioned branding scheme, using a city outline as its logo. The bottle is a pretty typical dark brown.</p><p>I found it to be attractive though and it has a nice appeal overall.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7a643a76-02cc-4af9-a840-a60ea34910e9_1114x3633.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bdd12992-68f7-4fc7-a221-1027c4cc309f_1463x1894.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/984f966c-9d1c-48a7-b786-04109ec93a01_1525x1847.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Cicero Salted Caramel Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Cicero Salted Caramel Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6394f309-ea80-4760-b235-0b810e163c59_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first open the bottle, you get a big whiff of caramel + root beer emanating out of the soda. The drink itself is very smooth and has a strong caramel flavor. I would call it somewhat complex because while you get the strong caramel syrupy flavor right off the bat, you also get some root beer kicking in, and a kind of weird taste as you swallow that lingers on the tongue.</p><p>I think the caramel is nice, but it also makes the root beer too sweet. It even reminds me a bit of some of the butterscotch root beers I have had in the past.</p><p>On the plus side, Cicero appears to use regular cane sugar and other mostly natural ingredients while also making it caffeine-free.</p><p>Note that once again, this is a pretty flat-tasting drink. When I mentioned smooth earlier, part of that smoothness comes from the lower carbonation and partially from the caramel.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 Their fish and chips are quite good, but they are expensive. Don&#8217;t expect to pay Gorton&#8217;s or Van de Kamps prices here.</p><p>They also make their own root beer that they sell in 12 oz bottles. You&#8217;ll have to check their website to find out when one of their trucks is near you, so you can try out this too!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>I personally like Off the Hook&#8217;s logo, so the fact that they just slap a sticker on a small bottle works just fine for me. Besides, they only stock their own drinks, so they don&#8217;t have to make their drink stand out against any competition. </p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/09c1a691-5875-4f66-a237-57529e26f11a_1385x4032.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/20c85504-570d-4d7e-acf6-a422a03e0334_1119x1668.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Off the Hook Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Off the Hook Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/940c9b52-31e8-4918-89a2-5052d5370fb2_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When I first poured this root beer, I noticed it didn&#8217;t produce any froth or foam. The smell is a pretty normal root beer odor, though. The first sip of the drink seemed rather complex, but subsequent sips seemed to mellow the initial impression.</p><p>I do feel like Off the Hook has a more complex flavor profile than A&amp;W or Mug does. Overall, I enjoyed the drink, but be warned: you are paying a premium since the bottles are only 12 oz.</p><p>As usual with root beer, this one is caffeine-free. Slightly less usual is that they use triple-filtered water, though! Also note that they use cane sugar and mostly normal ingredients.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg" width="1224" height="945" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:945,&quot;width&quot;:1224,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:268664,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/186770539?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><h2>The Wrap Up</h2><p>I enjoyed Off the Hook Harbor Root Beer. They had around 57 beverage options in 2025. Interestingly enough, Faygo root beer ranked as the best-tasting root beer in a September 2009 issue of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faygo#cite_note-freep-16">Bon Appetit</a>, which makes trying it more appealing.</p><p>I found my bottle of Faygo at a Kwik Star gas station in Ankeny, IA.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>As far as branding goes, I kind of like the cartoony logo and the label&#8217;s look. The cola looks like a typical brown root beer label, and the soda's color is also the typical one you would associate with root beer.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1e2581a8-c418-4245-80b2-e5e575c0a96f_1332x3819.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/b2537342-1d8e-43fb-98e0-f007d825c2be_2202x2988.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/cf23865c-d331-4aae-822e-201e18694c13_1967x2248.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Faygo Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Faygo Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a7c43078-f14c-41de-bcfd-87f0ec232b30_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>This was a fairly large bottle at 24 oz. The Faygo mix is a strong root beer flavor, but nothing really unique. Interestingly, Faygo contains both high-fructose corn syrup and sucralose though.</p><p>I would call this a generic root beer with a fairly generic flavor. Faygo&#8217;s biggest claim to fame is that it&#8217;s cheap and you get more bang for your buck than most other brands.</p><p>I do feel like it had a bit of a blah after taste as Mug is caffeine-free and is easily found in most large grocery stores.</p><p>Mug is owned by PepsiCo, although it was originally owned by Belfast Root Beer when it began its life in the 1940s. Pepsi bought Mug in the 1980s and has made it ever since.</p><h2>Branding</h2><p>I have always enjoyed dogs, so the fact that Mug has incorporated a bulldog into their logo is fun and different from the other mainstream brands.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/f237c0f5-db6e-47af-920f-935a185754d8_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/032e4c9f-ca38-4dab-8f2a-18c5dea34376_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Mug plastic bottl&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Mug bottle&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/576ed25c-922a-4068-8efa-ad5b61d0a6c5_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When I went to try Mug, I had it in mind that this was one of the root beers I didn&#8217;t care for. However, when I took a sip, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a decent root beer.</p><p>I feel like the root beer flavor is strong, while the consistency goes down smoothly. The drink seems fizzier than 1919. In fact, due to the higher carbonation, it doesn&#8217;t take much to make you eructate.</p><p>There is not really a vanilla flavor, but there is definitely something there. Perhaps a bit of light licorice. You&#8217;ll notice the root beer smell as soon as you open a can or bottle.</p><p>Here are the ingredients that don&#8217;t help much when trying to figure out the flavor profile:</p><div Filbert&#8217;s is based in Chicago, Illinois, and, at the time of writing, they offered 31 flavors.</p><p>Filbert&#8217;s Root Beer comes in a brown glass bottle. As far as I know, that is the only way you can buy it. I found it at a Hy-Vee in Urbandale, IA.</p><h2>Branding</h2><p>I don&#8217;t feel like much thought went into the branding. They appear to have made a sticker with a barrel on it, then added their logo and the flavor in the bottle.</p><p>The only reason it stands out on the shelf is that it is so minimal and old-fashioned looking.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1512fd28-8828-4f6b-9c36-2c0c933565c1_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c8830971-b879-4cbc-b1a9-42de6936223b_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Filbert's Old Time Draft Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Filbert's Old Time Draft Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/95042060-c4d7-44b4-9b67-6cf3b7906aec_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>The taste of Filbert&#8217;s is a little strange to me. You can definitely get the root beer tang within the flat, slightly fizzy drink, but it has some other flavors that you don&#8217;t find in the more mainstream root beers.</p><p>I&#8217;m not sure what to call it, but it&#8217;s a kind of cloying caramel- or vanilla-like taste. Perhaps a mix of the two, even though neither is mentioned on the label. This drink contains high-fructose corn syrup and appears to be caffeine-free. </p><p>Here&#8217;s the full list of ingredients:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link While the name comes from prohibition, the root beer itself isn&#8217;t that old. However, 1919 is brewed in small batches at one of America's oldest breweries.</p><p>Originally, 1919 was a draft-only type root beer. They recommended keeping their root beer cold and even shipped it in refrigerated trucks. You could also purchase the root beer in kegs for parties.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Root Brew Review is a reader-supported publication. Since it was only available directly from the brewery, a small handful of restaurants, and some bars, you needed to plan specific forays to find the stuff.</p><p>Fortunately, nowadays, you can purchase 1919 in a couple of different can sizes here in the Midwest. I have seen 1919 available in central Iowa at Fairway and Hy-Vee grocery stores. You may also find it at some World Market stores as well.</p><h2>1919 Branding</h2><p>The 1919 Root Beer branding is pretty nice. I like the red and silver colors of the can and the font chosen for the year, 1919.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/58f2d830-18bf-434a-a924-11796c4ace91_1575x2990.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8cfa7f19-5f4c-4e46-b956-78e80fd2a26d_1621x2923.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e4c75270-2db4-4967-b3ad-2590e2d17e81_1462x3126.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;1919 16 oz can&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;1919 16 oz can photos&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/35b69360-fc2a-4991-b824-ddca338ee1e9_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>If you go to the <a href="https://www.1919rootbeer.com/">1919 company website</a>, you will find photos of their 1919 kegs, 7.5 oz pony cans, and the 16 oz can that I am reviewing as well as various other types of 1919 merchandise.</p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>1919 root beer comes in a 16 oz can, which is four ounces more than most sodas. For example, if you bought an A&amp;W or a Mt Dew in a can, you would most likely get it in a 12-oz can.</p><p>When you first drink 1919, you will get a strong vanilla taste. The root beer itself seems to have a smooth, low-bubble character. I wouldn&#8217;t exactly call it flat, but it doesn&#8217;t have the strong carbonation of a Barq&#8217;s root beer. </p><p>Probably the closest mainstream root beer to 1919 would be A&amp;W. However, 1919 uses cane sugar instead of corn syrup, which makes it a bit better in my book.</p><p>For a full list of ingredients, check out this photo:</p><div The root beer flavor is pretty mild overall with only a slight after taste. I think I detect a hint of caramel in the flavor, but the ingredients only mention carmel color.</p><p>In general, this is a pleasing drink and worth trying if Back Pocket Brewery ever starts making it again.</p><p>Speaking of the ingredients, here they are:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
