For some reason, they chose to put the Orca logo on the cap rather than keeping with the root beer&#8217;s name, which is a departure from some of their other root brews.</p><p>I have seen this bottle in a few places so you might be able to find it as well. Mug has a reddish look to its labeling as well, but it doesn&#8217;t go for a full red logo like Old Red Eye does.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0bd59f4e-794f-4929-95f8-6dd5fad4dd18_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/29228224-d123-4eca-ab34-a57a46935e51_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Old Red Eye Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/941f5bd5-a0bf-4345-b72c-430f47bb8426_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Old Red Eye is caffiene free and gluten free. They also use pure cane sugar as their sweetener, and the ingredients are nice and short.</p><p>When you first open the bottle, you get a pretty standard root beer aroma. The flavor reminds me mostly of <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/4-mug-root-beer">Mug</a>. It doesn&#8217;t really have any unique flavor of its own, with maybe just a hint of licorice, even though that&#8217;s not listed as an ingredient.</p><p>The drink isn&#8217;t super fizzy or frothy, but it&#8217;s also not creamy like A&amp;W or some other brands.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" There are now twenty Dog n Suds restaurants in the Midwest, and you can get the root beer throughout the USA via various distributors.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Dog n Suds has a cartoon dog serving hot dogs and root beer on its logo. In fact, if you go to their <a href="https://www.dognsuds.com/">website</a>, you can see that their logo is the same as it was over 70 years ago.</p><p>This classic look helps them to stand out from other drinks, primarily because of the bold colors, but also because almost no other soda companies use cartoon characters in their logos.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9e982bb4-ae94-4d3e-908a-adc84689cc04_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/857b928d-79b1-4a94-8301-674b05691c4b_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/51adad09-bac3-450c-b493-e46918c55dba_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Dog n Suds Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c98beed7-0242-470a-a24c-63ab3242e8e8_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first open the bottle, you get a whiff of licorice and maybe a hint of vanilla. Root Beer. Imperial started making beverages in Milwaukee in the 1960&#8217;s. They also make a diet Dang and a butterscotch flavor of Dang! root beer as well. Besides root beer, Imperial also makes a red creme soda</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>I feel like Dang! does a better job in the branding department than many of the independent root beers. Mostly this is because it uses louder colors and the orange just pops really well compared with the dark brown of the root beer itself.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/5b9571ae-f25f-4db2-9688-d878657b5a8d_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c1d2a64b-c5f1-4859-a459-63d3f4d04c97_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c39c8cbf-de82-4082-9a51-be72ff89c102_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Dang! While the ingredients don&#8217;t mention licorice, I am not sure how else to describe the odor.</p><p>Regardless, when you take your first sip of Dang, the taste doesn&#8217;t really seem like root beer. It&#8217;s certainly &#8220;rootsy,&#8221; and it&#8217;s also more complex than an A&amp;W or a Barq&#8217;s tends to be, though.</p><p>The root beer is not creamy. There is no vanilla. There is some carbonation, perhaps more than A&amp;W, but without being foamy.</p><p>Interestingly, I found that I enjoyed the flavor more the more I drank it, which is not always the case with these more complex-tasting root beers.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They also recently started making <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/9-sunset-sarsaparilla">Sunset Sarsaparilla</a>.</p><p>Jones is a pretty popular brand with a wide variety of flavors. They also put out special flavors at various times of the year, such as their famous <a href="https://www.themarysue.com/taste-test-jones-soda-thanksgiving-pack/">Thanksgiving Holiday Pack</a>.</p><p>Let&#8217;s see how their root beer shakes out.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Jones has their own unique look. The photos on their bottles change, but since they usually use black-and-white photos, the &#8220;look&#8221; is mostly the same with their logo on top, the random photo, and then the flavor underneath.</p><p>I believe the photos were submitted by fans and chosen by the company. I&#8217;m not sure if they still do that.</p><p>Here are some photos of the bottle:</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e1dae46b-0e60-4f01-9959-211263573c89_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/df2017c4-5779-4ece-86c3-cfc473462054_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/f5f84958-83ac-46d9-b6a5-9941c0f9a9ca_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/61b7adb1-4841-4709-a099-70c2d26d8f66_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Jones Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d1fcca89-3461-434b-99e4-13c2b0780a8e_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Jones has a twist-off bottle cap, which is somewhat unusual for a glass bottle. The smell of the root beer is subtle, but it exists. Some root beers seem to have no smell whatsoever. I didn&#8217;t taste any licorice-flavoring, but their may be a hint of vanilla even though it&#8217;s not listed as being in there.</p><p>The root beer taste itself is pretty flat, but smooth. I wouldn&#8217;t call it creamy exactly, but it&#8217;s got a nice flavor. There aren&#8217;t any unusual or strong flavors though. Barq&#8217;s tends to be a strong root beer, and even A&amp;W tends to be a bit stronger than this.</p><p>However, I rather liked this one.</p><p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the ingredients:</p><div I can&#8217;t really say it has a unique root beer flavor, as it tends to be quite similar to many popular brews, but it&#8217;s a nice one. They didn&#8217;t mess up the taste and there are no unusual ingredients.</p><p>Give Jones a try! They were one of the first popular brands to always use cane sugar, which is pretty cool!</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Root Brew Review is a reader-supported publication. However, it is now sold by <a href="https://www.orcabeverage.com/">Orca Beverage Co</a>, the same company behind <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/19-bedfords-root-beer">Bedford&#8217;s Root Beer</a>.</p><p>There are lots of other root beers from Chicago, such as <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/7-cicero-salted-caramel-root-beer">Cicero&#8217;s</a>, <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/13-triple-xxx-root-beer">Triple XXX</a>, and <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/3-filberts-old-time-draft-root-beer">Filbert&#8217;s</a>. So if you like Chicago, you should give this drink a try too!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>There really isn&#8217;t much branding to this drink. You have the O-So logo in brown and yellow, and that&#8217;s about it. The cap is a fun color, though, and they did slap the phrase &#8220;Oh! So Good&#8221; on the neck of the bottle in yellow and white as well.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0e3667ad-a99c-4283-964e-a978bd851c47_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a74bac33-e8eb-4640-b8a4-62505c787def_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/b3949b9c-866e-4b38-9d15-b31020d1db68_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;O-So Butterscotch Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fab481f2-d2e1-464f-9423-072fcdf3388c_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>You can smell the butterscotch when you pop the cap off the bottle. There is a strong butterscotch flavor to the drink as well. In fact, I would call it more of a butterscotch dark soda than a root beer, though there is some root-beerish flavor.</p><p>Carbonation is light, so there isn&#8217;t a lot of fizz, and the root beer goes down smooth and creamy.</p><p>I think the main flavors, though, are the butterscotch and the vanilla. O-So also goes for pure cane sugar and mostly readable ingredients, so that&#8217;s a good thing.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Some said that <a href="https://www.whiterockbeverages.com/">White Rock Beverages</a> makes it, but their website has no information about it at all other than mentioning it on their <a href="https://www.whiterockbeverages.com/find-a-retailer">where-to-buy</a> page. The bottle itself mentions <a href="https://sprecherbrewery.com/">Sprecher</a> which is interesting since they already have a couple of different root beers of their own.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The logo for Olde Brooklyn&#8217;s root beer is nice and old-fashioned. I rather enjoy the colors and the bridge. I don&#8217;t think it will catch your eye while you are walking down the aisle, except perhaps because of its old-fashioned look.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/48617e53-6101-4daf-88f1-587c9e14e928_1976x3747.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6efb8e48-9349-4e3c-8742-73e03c2d2f7e_2639x4032.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/396562dd-b73d-4283-9ac0-f1f441a423cb_3749x1536.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/662d077b-119d-45ca-8df9-740d75f153a4_1884x3276.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Olde Brooklyn Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/73294ad6-bd18-4446-b162-3fc1265178c6_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Old Brooklyn was completely flat when I drank mine, which means no foam and very little carbonation. It reminded me of A&amp;W that had been left in the glass too long. The drink was creamy and tasted good, but it also felt generic and didn&#8217;t stand out.</p><p>Still, I would be happy to drink it again. It may have been flat because it was so close to its expiry date.</p><p>Other reviewers mention the drink as having a fruity odor or taste, but I didn&#8217;t notice that. However, there is yucca extract in this drink, so perhaps you will be able to discern that with your palate.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg" width="1456" height="712" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:712,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1038887,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/195348881?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>In general, this seems like a good root beer. You can find Olipop in Target and many other stores. They are typically packaged in cans. Olipop has several other flavors you can try as well.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The Olipop brand tends to go with an understated set of pastel colors. In Target, you can usually find single cans of Olipop near the produce section.</p><p>In general, the colors are recognizable and you shouldn&#8217;t have trouble finding it.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/52436282-a76b-4be3-887c-8955e30f9145_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/080046c1-00d1-4732-b144-923f65c02f5b_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Olipop Classic Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3a4edb47-bf6a-4b4c-a020-b8905a70c68b_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>This root beer must be refrigerated, probably because of the prebiotics it contains. Olipop also uses plant fibers and botanicals in its drinks.</p><p>The smell of the drink is rather medicinal and the taste is as well. They use Stevia for sweetening, so you will probably notice a diet soda aftertaste.</p><p>Speaking of the taste, it is pretty complex. I originally thought this would be like a flavored seltzer, but it is a true soda, or close to it. However, they have a lot of plants like artichoke, chicory root, cassava root, kudzu root, marshmallow root, Nopal cactus, and Calendula flower, which makes it taste different from any other root beer I have ever had.</p><p>I didn&#8217;t enjoy the flavor much, but it was certainly interesting.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/72fc0d03-cbd4-4108-bb70-cb73f7561463_4032x767.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0232ce2b-b411-4741-8164-50b621124fc6_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Ingredients and nutrition facts&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0cc1bc3e-6f06-472a-b2a9-d35a64cf89d6_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>I don&#8217;t really like prebiotic or probiotic drinks, regardless of whether they claim to taste like root beer or not. They have around sixteen flavors, including many diet versions of their drinks. According to their website, they were originally bottling from 1923 to 1967, but then they went out of business and were recently restarted. They also have a <a href="https://pollyqbbq.com/">BBQ sauce</a>!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>All of Polly&#8217;s Pop sodas include the macaw on their label. I rather like the look, and the bottle cap is fun too. They definitely have a unique look, and I like that it&#8217;s a small brand.</p><p>I almost wish the label had the same metallic look as the bottle cap.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d9b69dc5-0f31-499a-88ba-aa5d8568e395_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8b61f3d9-ba65-4f88-bb4a-58cc27efeeb6_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9f34b4df-06f0-4124-ab43-96a091d607d3_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Polly's Pop Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Polly's Pop Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/330962e4-3bc0-4144-ba7e-5465733c6167_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>While it smells alright, the flavor of Polly&#8217;s Pop root beer is rather sharp but strangely watered down. The first gulp had a strong flavor, but I wouldn&#8217;t call it root beer. There&#8217;s not really any caramel or licorice and the carbonization is quite low.</p><p>In general, I would call this fairly bland. This is the first root beer I have had that mentions containing &#8220;Root Beer Syrup&#8221;. On the plus side, they use cane sugar at least.</p><p>I do feel like the flavor comes out a bit better if you let it warm up a little rather than drinking it ice cold. It&#8217;s still not amazing, but it&#8217;s better that way.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg" width="1456" height="650" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:650,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:946041,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/193106520?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>While Polly&#8217;s Pop Root Beer is not my favorite, I enjoy supporting local brands. When beer was banned, Triple XXX continued to thrive. You can <a href="https://www.triplexxxfamilyrestaurant.com/shop/">purchase</a> Triple XXX in bottles, cans, or as a jelly.</p><p>I got mine from a local Hy-Vee store, but you can also purchase Triple XXX online. According to their website, the three X&#8217;s mean that they are a top-tier product. We will see when we taste test this drink!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>From a branding perspective, they mostly went with red and yellow. I do feel like it is glaring enough to sort of shout out to the casual browser.</p><p>Triple XXX also went with a brown bottle rather than a clear one, which is interesting.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fe0a3545-8b50-40b6-8dcb-1df7efdfabfc_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bc338a50-94f8-4a29-b544-f9c2075c79ad_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1176f4ba-ca45-4128-9326-e318d6e2799d_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/58d77c62-d5cb-4b5c-9746-cdb5c85a0e18_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Triple XXX Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Triple XXX Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c8cf8ed1-ea2f-4fb1-9e18-101ea4539a9b_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first take a swig of Triple XXX Root Beer, you will get a strong flavor profile. While the ingredients don&#8217;t mention licorice or wintergreen, I feel like there is a taste of both in this root beer.</p><p>Personally, I don&#8217;t like licorice much, so this isn&#8217;t my favorite root beer right off the bat. On the other hand, if you keep sipping the drink, that flavor seems to mellow a bit. I don&#8217;t really enjoy the aftertaste, though. It reminds me a lot of a diet drink aftertaste.</p><p>The other thing to note about this drink is how flat it is. In fact, I would say it is one of the flattest root beers I&#8217;ve ever had. It&#8217;s also quite smooth.</p><p>As usual with these smaller root brews, this one is caffeine-free and made with pure sugar cane.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a Barq&#8217;s has regular and diet versions of the root beer. There is also a Barq&#8217;s red creme soda, French vanilla creme, and a cherry bite version.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Barq&#8217;s branding features a silver can with the Barq&#8217;s logo emblazoned on it. I can&#8217;t be sure, but they may be trying to make the drink look like a beer can with its colors.</p><p>However, this works since there aren&#8217;t many silver drinks outside of perhaps certain diet sodas. </p><p>The logo is recognizable, and you&#8217;ll find it in many restaurants and stores. Barq&#8217;s may not be as recognizable as A&amp;W, but it&#8217;s found in many more locations.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8902ea65-6595-4ff9-af7b-42a8b13c59b4_2350x4032.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3601230d-8bb7-48df-bc9c-e0d832fd8399_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/877bb950-8e96-40f4-978b-681412c59639_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9ff51ccb-50b0-4923-b358-59cc27ae6a08_1244x1036.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Barq's Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/5b79dd98-7e84-4575-8371-e5844ec83daa_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Barq&#8217;s is known to have &#8220;bite&#8221;. I believe the bite comes from the fact that Barq&#8217;s is the only mainstream root beer to contain caffeine. I feel like it also has a bit more carbonation than A&amp;W or Mug. According to Google Gemini, the caffeine content is roughly 22mg per 12 fl oz. However, the fountain version of Barq&#8217;s is often uncaffeinated. </p><p>I personally like the way Barq&#8217;s tastes. It isn&#8217;t smooth and creamy like A&amp;W tends to be. Instead, I would call it a stronger-tasting root beer with more of a rootsy, perhaps licorice, flavor.</p><p>Unfortunately, Barq&#8217;s went with high fructose corn syrup as its primary sweetener.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Allison Ellsworth began exploring alternatives to soda in 2015, creating new drinks in her kitchen that she hoped would be healthier. Eventually, she created &#8220;Mother Beverage&#8221;, a drink based on apple cider vinegar with some flavor infusions that she sold at a local farmer&#8217;s market.</p><p>A rep from World Market tried the drink out and was interested in selling it in their stores. Eventually, she went on Shark Tank and rebranded to Poppi. Amazingly enough, Poppi got popular on TikTok and was sold in stores and on Amazon right out the gate. </p><p>PepsiCo bought out Poppi in May 2025.</p><p>Which brings us to their Root Beer, which is the only drink I really care about since this is a Root Beer review website.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Personally speaking, I find the branding kind of boring. Poppi goes for pastel colors, so they don&#8217;t really stand out as a bright colored drink. On the other hand, since all their drinks have muted tones and a similar look to them, you will be able to recognize them quickly on the shelf.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3e83dcc8-913b-4ea2-8c58-a3dbf2caadbd_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fab84455-30fd-4bd0-93f4-7454eed95a90_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0e49f535-5af8-419f-ac02-0b0c9445464c_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2d7b8256-74c7-46b3-95fd-e6b32334769c_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Poppi Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Poppi Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/db356ca0-5675-430c-8fc3-659d0dd4b525_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Unfortunately, the first time you take a sip of this drink, you will find that it hits you like a gut punch. The flavor is very medicinal, probably due to the apple cider vinegar. On the other hand, you do smell the root beer odor, and there is a definite taste of root beer buried in there. You&#8217;ll also probably note some kind of minty flavor in the background, too.</p><p>Here&#8217;s a full listing of the ingredients for you to peruse:</p><div I haven&#8217;t tried the game or the show, but I did try the Sarsaparilla.</p><p>You see sarsaparilla mentioned in many Western movies and TV shows, but finding the drink can be challenging. It is refreshing to find it so often now, but you still need to search for it. For example, you won&#8217;t likely find any at Wal-Mart or Target. You have to go to a grocery store, and even then, it has to have a specialty drink section.</p><p>Hy-Vee is one of the few grocery stores that seems interested in having a wide variety of speciality sodas. If you have one near you, you can probably find this drink or a different kind of sarsaparilla.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>From a branding point of view, everything I have read says that the drink looks like the one in the show / game. </p><p>The logo and colors look nice. However, when you take your first mouthful, it has a medicinal taste. This is definitely not a root beer or normal sarsaparilla flavor. Maybe a cross between Coke and root beer with a more cola flavor. I have seen some commenters call it a cross between root beer and grape soda, but I don&#8217;t really taste any grape.</p><p>You get that medicinal hit right after it enters your mouth, and it lingers as an aftertaste, too. The sarsaparilla is not flat, but not as sharp as soda water either.</p><p>From an ingredients point of view, you can see that they use a lot of the same ingredients you find in root beer. </p><div Jackson Hole Soda has around ten sodas in total, including Buckin&#8217; Rootbeer. </p><p>As with many of these lesser known soda manufacturers, it is really difficult to learn anything about them. For some reason, most of these companies do not share how long they have been in business or even which state they are located in. However, the bottle I found was filled in Washington state anyway.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Root Brew Review is a reader-supported publication. It has a kind of four-color look and feel to it using a photograph that is either from antiquity or made to look that way.</p><p>You can see the olde fashioned photo below:</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e106132b-4cff-44ea-b517-cd05e6b28178_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/81bd6cbb-09e1-4c81-928e-5a4cc7f3ea69_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/48f3890a-c58a-4fda-9eca-88b192c867c5_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Snake River Sarsaparilla&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Snake River Sarsaparilla&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/69f6eafc-3b14-49b3-bdeb-7aa18cd057f5_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>This look is reminiscent of <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/3-filberts-old-time-draft-root-beer">Filbert&#8217;s old time root beer</a>, although I would say that Filbert&#8217;s was more colorful than this example.</p><p>You could argue that by using this black-and-white photo, the soda may be more distinctive than its colorful brethren on the shelf. However, when you have a lot of brown bottles of root beer and sarsaparilla all lined up, I&#8217;m not sure that this helps.</p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>The sarsaparilla has a more complex taste than many mainstream root beers. While there is definitely the rootsy flavor you would expect from a root beer, there is a mix of additional flavors too. I wouldn&#8217;t call it licorice or even caramel, though there is definitely a smooth flavor profile.</p><p>Snake River sarsaparilla has a bit of bite, like Barq&#8217;s. Snake River also has more carbonation than A&amp;W or Mug seems to, but doesn&#8217;t seem to be foamy.</p><p>The smell is sweet, with a hint of root beer, but I don&#8217;t think I would necessarily characterize it as a root beer smell.</p><p>If you take a gander at the ingredients for the Sarsaparilla, you will see that it is caffiene free and uses cane sugar. Perhaps the complex taste comes from the quillaia extract? I have never seen that ingredient mentioned in a root beer before anyway.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" According to this <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/cicero-beverage-co-awarded-two-2014-bevstar-awards-for-premium-beverages-275579351.html">review</a>, Cicero is based out of Chicago, IL. When I tried going to Cicero&#8217;s website, however, I was blocked by my ISP as it is listed as a porn site, so they don&#8217;t seem to have their own web presence at the time of writing.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The company has gone with an old-fashioned branding scheme, using a city outline as its logo. The bottle is a pretty typical dark brown.</p><p>I found it to be attractive though and it has a nice appeal overall.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7a643a76-02cc-4af9-a840-a60ea34910e9_1114x3633.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bdd12992-68f7-4fc7-a221-1027c4cc309f_1463x1894.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/984f966c-9d1c-48a7-b786-04109ec93a01_1525x1847.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Cicero Salted Caramel Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Cicero Salted Caramel Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6394f309-ea80-4760-b235-0b810e163c59_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first open the bottle, you get a big whiff of caramel + root beer emanating out of the soda. The drink itself is very smooth and has a strong caramel flavor. I would call it somewhat complex because while you get the strong caramel syrupy flavor right off the bat, you also get some root beer kicking in, and a kind of weird taste as you swallow that lingers on the tongue.</p><p>I think the caramel is nice, but it also makes the root beer too sweet. It even reminds me a bit of some of the butterscotch root beers I have had in the past.</p><p>On the plus side, Cicero appears to use regular cane sugar and other mostly natural ingredients while also making it caffeine-free.</p><p>Note that once again, this is a pretty flat-tasting drink. When I mentioned smooth earlier, part of that smoothness comes from the lower carbonation and partially from the caramel.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 Their fish and chips are quite good, but they are expensive. Don&#8217;t expect to pay Gorton&#8217;s or Van de Kamps prices here.</p><p>They also make their own root beer that they sell in 12 oz bottles. You&#8217;ll have to check their website to find out when one of their trucks is near you, so you can try out this too!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>I personally like Off the Hook&#8217;s logo, so the fact that they just slap a sticker on a small bottle works just fine for me. Besides, they only stock their own drinks, so they don&#8217;t have to make their drink stand out against any competition. </p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/09c1a691-5875-4f66-a237-57529e26f11a_1385x4032.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/20c85504-570d-4d7e-acf6-a422a03e0334_1119x1668.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Off the Hook Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Off the Hook Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/940c9b52-31e8-4918-89a2-5052d5370fb2_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When I first poured this root beer, I noticed it didn&#8217;t produce any froth or foam. The smell is a pretty normal root beer odor, though. The first sip of the drink seemed rather complex, but subsequent sips seemed to mellow the initial impression.</p><p>I do feel like Off the Hook has a more complex flavor profile than A&amp;W or Mug does. Overall, I enjoyed the drink, but be warned: you are paying a premium since the bottles are only 12 oz.</p><p>As usual with root beer, this one is caffeine-free. Slightly less usual is that they use triple-filtered water, though! Also note that they use cane sugar and mostly normal ingredients.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg" width="1224" height="945" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:945,&quot;width&quot;:1224,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:268664,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/186770539?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ai-v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd91086a2-b717-4be1-a597-bb2d575af348_1224x945.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><h2>The Wrap Up</h2><p>I enjoyed Off the Hook Harbor Root Beer. They had around 57 beverage options in 2025. Interestingly enough, Faygo root beer ranked as the best-tasting root beer in a September 2009 issue of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faygo#cite_note-freep-16">Bon Appetit</a>, which makes trying it more appealing.</p><p>I found my bottle of Faygo at a Kwik Star gas station in Ankeny, IA.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>As far as branding goes, I kind of like the cartoony logo and the label&#8217;s look. The cola looks like a typical brown root beer label, and the soda's color is also the typical one you would associate with root beer.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1e2581a8-c418-4245-80b2-e5e575c0a96f_1332x3819.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/b2537342-1d8e-43fb-98e0-f007d825c2be_2202x2988.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/cf23865c-d331-4aae-822e-201e18694c13_1967x2248.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Faygo Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Faygo Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a7c43078-f14c-41de-bcfd-87f0ec232b30_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>This was a fairly large bottle at 24 oz. The Faygo mix is a strong root beer flavor, but nothing really unique. Interestingly, Faygo contains both high-fructose corn syrup and sucralose though.</p><p>I would call this a generic root beer with a fairly generic flavor. Faygo&#8217;s biggest claim to fame is that it&#8217;s cheap and you get more bang for your buck than most other brands.</p><p>I do feel like it had a bit of a blah after taste as
