Usually, Sparkling Ice is also caffeine-free, but, funnily enough, their Root Beer flavor is in their caffeine line, so that&#8217;s what we are trying today!</p><p>Sparkling Ice has lots of other flavors, so if you don&#8217;t like root beer, you can try one of their other flavors.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>If you&#8217;re looking for Sparkling Ice, you will notice the brand. Often, the Sparkling Ice brand uses plastic bottles for their drinks, but for their Caffeine line, they use an aluminum can.</p><p>The Sparkling Ice logo is nice and large, but I actually found it hard to tell that this was root beer. I only looked at it because of the color of the can.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/dc2245e0-1282-4093-b6f2-846b1d214fb0_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2eddc227-6e71-49dd-a1b3-11557f355230_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/5d200a0d-c7e9-4ce7-9be1-deb1b70dfbfe_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Sparkling Ice Caffeine Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7b8eee06-d8a4-4a54-bb94-63c250645de3_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Sparkling Ice Root Beer has less than 2% of fruit and vegetable juice, but you can&#8217;t tell it has any. When you pop the tab, the smell of root beer is very faint.</p><p>Interestingly enough, there is a definite root beer flavor to this drink. I usually don&#8217;t think sparkling water has much flavor at all, but they did an okay job at it. The drink has more carbonation than I expected as well.</p><p>However, the root beer flavor itself is kind of bleh. I didn&#8217;t really care for it. The after taste is kind of yuck too, but that may be the sucralose. I don&#8217;t usually like the artificial sweeteners very much.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg" width="1456" height="1941" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1941,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:3138609,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/210901877?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5WP5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7543c64c-1894-41af-bb0c-344810ffb17f_4032x3024.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>The end result is that I can see why people like sparkling water as an alternative to a soda. Today, I am going to try Casey&#8217;s Root Beer, which is a root beer made by the popular Casey&#8217;s gas station.</p><p>Casey&#8217;s has several other soda flavors to try as well. You can find Casey&#8217;s in many Midwest states in the USA.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The branding is pretty muted overall. You get the Casey&#8217;s logo along with the flavor underneath it in white lettering. The label itself is red with a little brown. The taste is definitely root beer along with some other herbs, probably a mix of licorice, caramel, and maybe vanilla or similar.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg" width="1456" height="1741" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1741,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1869771,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/210642429?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!n3Xz!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffdf6cfb5-4a7c-4a86-8f67-df9c3bb0f97f_2505x2996.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>Casey&#8217;s did an alright job. You can read all about how the company was founded by a pharmacist and a veterinarian. They also give you a nice twist-off cap, which I like for a bottled drink. They are made in Minnesota in a town by the same name.</p><p>Spring Grove also has several other soda flavors, including Rhu-berry, sour grapes, orange, etc.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Spring Grove doesn&#8217;t really go for branding. It&#8217;s basically a semi-cursive writing of their name on a dark brown bottle plus a woodland-type scene underneath</p><p>There is a little color on the silver cap though. On the other hand, the understated look may help them to be noticed since most brands go for bright or garish colors.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/feec6103-01a6-4ad3-a595-172e67960308_1547x3770.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9b805df0-d056-4ef3-8398-9917b0c5b659_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/399c9a8b-a1c4-4b8c-96e9-c566654a03cd_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Spring Grove Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8389f141-2fbe-4d07-a31a-19cff632a2d0_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Spring Grove smells kind of minty and I found the drink itself to be minty too. However, the ingredients list doesn&#8217;t mention anything about mint or really any unusual flavorings at all.</p><p>The only unusual thing in the ingredients is that they use both cane sugar and corn syrup for the sweetener, which I don&#8217;t think I have ever seen with any other root beer.</p><p>Anyway, you do get some root beer flavor here, but the mint (or whatever it is) is probably about 50% of the flavor, so it&#8217;s definitely kind of weird. The aftertaste is not great either.</p><p>I found the drink to be pretty flat, but their website says it will foam up over ice cream and I would assume the same to be true over ice.</p><div I have found it in Hy-Vee and Menards, but I am sure you can find it in other locations as well.</p><p>Sprecher uses a signature fire-brewing process that caramelizes flavors in a gas-fired kettle for unmatched depth and smoothness.</p><p>Note: Sprecher bottles require a bottle opener. However, they also offer a canned version of most of their sodas, so if you can go that route as well.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Sprecher uses a maple leaf in addition to their regular Sprecher font and red lettering for their logo. It kind of reminds me of a wine bottle&#8217;s look.</p><p>Here&#8217;s what it looks like:</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e84ff929-3483-43b1-b586-2712e0e39d8f_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/50fe8224-cac7-46bb-acf3-933f60970d6e_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/95bc1e47-4d6b-4988-9b6e-5e42074d1799_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3cff3b67-89f2-473e-838a-92d3436bbbcf_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Sprecher Maple root beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c1c50cd3-b2e1-4cdd-abbe-634f1bfea605_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>Interestingly, Sprecher eschews their label on the bottle cap.</p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>While Sprecher&#8217;s regular root beer is made with honey, this maple version skips the honey and uses maple instead, along with glucose syrup. I&#8217;m not sure if the standard root beer also includes glucose syrup or not, so stay tuned for a future review where we will find out together!</p><p>Sprecher&#8217;s maple root beer is very smooth and creamy. But smooth with root beer also means very flat, which is the case here. If you are looking for carbonation, you should skip this one as it&#8217;s almost non-existent.</p><p>The maple flavoring is strong and seems to fight the root beer for dominance. To me, it seemed about a 50/50 split in that respect. I found it a little strange on the first swallow, but it&#8217;s certainly drinkable. </p><p>I prefer vanilla to maple in my root beer though.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a Inspired by the historic 32nd Infantry &#8220;Red Arrow&#8221; Division, it is caffeine-free, gluten-free, and brewed with real cane sugar.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Red Arrow&#8217;s branding is a distinctive white and red. It might not exactly jump out if put next to Dr. Pepper, but when the bottles are among other root beers, it may stand out from the crowd.</p><p>You can see what it looks like in general in the following photos:</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bdca30bb-8bef-49ca-96c0-b4159bcce397_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/ed57f4d7-9ce2-4045-a6f1-65bfc982b745_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/419df9a2-c009-475d-b6e9-dcf1cb38a134_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Red Arrow Root Beer photos&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/68fddd6b-7c41-4e54-8a9e-a079d726179d_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>Orca skipped the logo for the bottle cap and went with their own branding there.</p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first twist off the metal cap on this root beer, you will find it has a pleasant aroma. Your first sip, though, is of a very flat and smooth brew. In fact, if I didn&#8217;t know better, I would have said the drink had expired; it was so flat.</p><p>Anyway, the drink is kind of creamy and I thought it tasted a bit like vanilla. However, the ingredients state that Red Arrow contains wintergreen and licorice extract. I didn&#8217;t find either of those flavors very strong, and if they existed, they were quite subtle.</p><p>Here&#8217;s the full ingredients list:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a However, you may want to use a napkin or your shirt to twist off the cap, as the metal can be kind of sharp.</p><p>The root beer has an interesting, complex flavor profile. I would describe it as a mix of vanilla or caramel or both plus the root beer flavor. I found the drink very smooth and flat, with little carbonation.</p><p>In other words, Sioux City doesn&#8217;t have the sharp, strong bite of Barq&#8217;s nor the creaminess of A&amp;W, but it sits somewhere comfortably in between the two. </p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>I liked Sioux City Root Beer. As I said at the beginning, the brand is easy to find and affordable here in Iowa. You can usually find it in singles or in packs of four at Hy-Vee.</p><p>Give it a try and let me know what you think!</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Root Brew Review is a reader-supported publication. Brownie is an interesting one.</span></p><p><span>Let&#8217;s get to it!</span></p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>From a branding standpoint, I feel like Brownie is very olde school. They have a drawing of a kid&#8217;s head in a red, off-white, and blue logo.</p><p>It&#8217;s not a bad logo, and there&#8217;s not really anything like it, so it stands out in that respect. The first whiff is of a strong caramel with maybe a hint of vanilla or root beer.</p><p>The flavoring is very heavy in the caramel department. So much so that you don&#8217;t really get much root beer flavor at all. Brownie is also one of the flattest carbonated beverages I have ever had. It drinks smoothly, but almost no head or bubbles to speak of.</p><p>The ingredients list is pretty small and easy to read as well:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg" width="1456" height="1941" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1941,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1748049,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/204736310?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!An9g!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd8b2bb83-667f-48e9-98c0-e61a19a78ded_4032x3024.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>Brownie is a funny root beer. For some reason, they chose to put the Orca logo on the cap rather than keeping with the root beer&#8217;s name, which is a departure from some of their other root brews.</p><p>I have seen this bottle in a few places so you might be able to find it as well. They also use pure cane sugar as their sweetener, and the ingredients are nice and short.</p><p>When you first open the bottle, you get a pretty standard root beer aroma. The flavor reminds me mostly of <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/4-mug-root-beer">Mug</a>. It doesn&#8217;t really have any unique flavor of its own, with maybe just a hint of licorice, even though that&#8217;s not listed as an ingredient.</p><p>The drink isn&#8217;t super fizzy or frothy, but it&#8217;s also not creamy like A&amp;W or some other brands.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Root Beer. Imperial started making beverages in Milwaukee in the 1960&#8217;s. They also make a diet Dang and a butterscotch flavor of Dang! root beer as well. Besides root beer, Imperial also makes a red creme soda</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>I feel like Dang! does a better job in the branding department than many of the independent root beers. Mostly this is because it uses louder colors and the orange just pops really well compared with the dark brown of the root beer itself.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/5b9571ae-f25f-4db2-9688-d878657b5a8d_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c1d2a64b-c5f1-4859-a459-63d3f4d04c97_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c39c8cbf-de82-4082-9a51-be72ff89c102_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Dang! While the ingredients don&#8217;t mention licorice, I am not sure how else to describe the odor.</p><p>Regardless, when you take your first sip of Dang, the taste doesn&#8217;t really seem like root beer. It&#8217;s certainly &#8220;rootsy,&#8221; and it&#8217;s also more complex than an A&amp;W or a Barq&#8217;s tends to be, though.</p><p>The root beer is not creamy. There is no vanilla. There is some carbonation, perhaps more than A&amp;W, but without being foamy.</p><p>Interestingly, I found that I enjoyed the flavor more the more I drank it, which is not always the case with these more complex-tasting root beers.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They also recently started making <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/9-sunset-sarsaparilla">Sunset Sarsaparilla</a>.</p><p>Jones is a pretty popular brand with a wide variety of flavors. They also put out special flavors at various times of the year, such as their famous <a href="https://www.themarysue.com/taste-test-jones-soda-thanksgiving-pack/">Thanksgiving Holiday Pack</a>.</p><p>Let&#8217;s see how their root beer shakes out.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>Jones has their own unique look. The photos on their bottles change, but since they usually use black-and-white photos, the &#8220;look&#8221; is mostly the same with their logo on top, the random photo, and then the flavor underneath.</p><p>I believe the photos were submitted by fans and chosen by the company. I&#8217;m not sure if they still do that.</p><p>Here are some photos of the bottle:</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e1dae46b-0e60-4f01-9959-211263573c89_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/df2017c4-5779-4ece-86c3-cfc473462054_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/f5f84958-83ac-46d9-b6a5-9941c0f9a9ca_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/61b7adb1-4841-4709-a099-70c2d26d8f66_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Jones Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d1fcca89-3461-434b-99e4-13c2b0780a8e_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Jones has a twist-off bottle cap, which is somewhat unusual for a glass bottle. The smell of the root beer is subtle, but it exists. Some root beers seem to have no smell whatsoever. I didn&#8217;t taste any licorice-flavoring, but their may be a hint of vanilla even though it&#8217;s not listed as being in there.</p><p>The root beer taste itself is pretty flat, but smooth. I wouldn&#8217;t call it creamy exactly, but it&#8217;s got a nice flavor. There aren&#8217;t any unusual or strong flavors though. Barq&#8217;s tends to be a strong root beer, and even A&amp;W tends to be a bit stronger than this.</p><p>However, I rather liked this one.</p><p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the ingredients:</p><div I can&#8217;t really say it has a unique root beer flavor, as it tends to be quite similar to many popular brews, but it&#8217;s a nice one. However, it is now sold by <a href="https://www.orcabeverage.com/">Orca Beverage Co</a>, the same company behind <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/19-bedfords-root-beer">Bedford&#8217;s Root Beer</a>.</p><p>There are lots of other root beers from Chicago, such as <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/7-cicero-salted-caramel-root-beer">Cicero&#8217;s</a>, <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/13-triple-xxx-root-beer">Triple XXX</a>, and <a href="https://www.rootbrewreview.com/p/3-filberts-old-time-draft-root-beer">Filbert&#8217;s</a>. So if you like Chicago, you should give this drink a try too!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>There really isn&#8217;t much branding to this drink. You have the O-So logo in brown and yellow, and that&#8217;s about it. The cap is a fun color, though, and they did slap the phrase &#8220;Oh! So Good&#8221; on the neck of the bottle in yellow and white as well.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0e3667ad-a99c-4283-964e-a978bd851c47_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a74bac33-e8eb-4640-b8a4-62505c787def_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/b3949b9c-866e-4b38-9d15-b31020d1db68_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;O-So Butterscotch Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fab481f2-d2e1-464f-9423-072fcdf3388c_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>You can smell the butterscotch when you pop the cap off the bottle. There is a strong butterscotch flavor to the drink as well. In fact, I would call it more of a butterscotch dark soda than a root beer, though there is some root-beerish flavor.</p><p>Carbonation is light, so there isn&#8217;t a lot of fizz, and the root beer goes down smooth and creamy.</p><p>I think the main flavors, though, are the butterscotch and the vanilla. O-So also goes for pure cane sugar and mostly readable ingredients, so that&#8217;s a good thing.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Some said that <a href="https://www.whiterockbeverages.com/">White Rock Beverages</a> makes it, but their website has no information about it at all other than mentioning it on their <a href="https://www.whiterockbeverages.com/find-a-retailer">where-to-buy</a> page. The bottle itself mentions <a href="https://sprecherbrewery.com/">Sprecher</a> which is interesting since they already have a couple of different root beers of their own.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The logo for Olde Brooklyn&#8217;s root beer is nice and old-fashioned. I don&#8217;t think it will catch your eye while you are walking down the aisle, except perhaps because of its old-fashioned look.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/48617e53-6101-4daf-88f1-587c9e14e928_1976x3747.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6efb8e48-9349-4e3c-8742-73e03c2d2f7e_2639x4032.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/396562dd-b73d-4283-9ac0-f1f441a423cb_3749x1536.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/662d077b-119d-45ca-8df9-740d75f153a4_1884x3276.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Olde Brooklyn Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/73294ad6-bd18-4446-b162-3fc1265178c6_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>Old Brooklyn was completely flat when I drank mine, which means no foam and very little carbonation. It reminded me of A&amp;W that had been left in the glass too long. The drink was creamy and tasted good, but it also felt generic and didn&#8217;t stand out.</p><p>Still, I would be happy to drink it again. It may have been flat because it was so close to its expiry date.</p><p>Other reviewers mention the drink as having a fruity odor or taste, but I didn&#8217;t notice that. However, there is yucca extract in this drink, so perhaps you will be able to discern that with your palate.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg" width="1456" height="712" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:712,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1038887,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/195348881?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!GSDM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d18fd60-758e-40c3-9db0-81846848cec4_3487x1705.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>In general, this seems like a good root beer. You can find Olipop in Target and many other stores. They are typically packaged in cans. Olipop has several other flavors you can try as well.</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>The Olipop brand tends to go with an understated set of pastel colors. In Target, you can usually find single cans of Olipop near the produce section.</p><p>In general, the colors are recognizable and you shouldn&#8217;t have trouble finding it.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/52436282-a76b-4be3-887c-8955e30f9145_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/080046c1-00d1-4732-b144-923f65c02f5b_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Olipop Classic Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3a4edb47-bf6a-4b4c-a020-b8905a70c68b_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>This root beer must be refrigerated, probably because of the prebiotics it contains. Olipop also uses plant fibers and botanicals in its drinks.</p><p>The smell of the drink is rather medicinal and the taste is as well. They use Stevia for sweetening, so you will probably notice a diet soda aftertaste.</p><p>Speaking of the taste, it is pretty complex. I originally thought this would be like a flavored seltzer, but it is a true soda, or close to it. However, they have a lot of plants like artichoke, chicory root, cassava root, kudzu root, marshmallow root, Nopal cactus, and Calendula flower, which makes it taste different from any other root beer I have ever had.</p><p>I didn&#8217;t enjoy the flavor much, but it was certainly interesting.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/72fc0d03-cbd4-4108-bb70-cb73f7561463_4032x767.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0232ce2b-b411-4741-8164-50b621124fc6_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Ingredients and nutrition facts&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0cc1bc3e-6f06-472a-b2a9-d35a64cf89d6_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>I don&#8217;t really like prebiotic or probiotic drinks, regardless of whether they claim to taste like root beer or not. They have around sixteen flavors, including many diet versions of their drinks. According to their website, they were originally bottling from 1923 to 1967, but then they went out of business and were recently restarted. They also have a <a href="https://pollyqbbq.com/">BBQ sauce</a>!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>All of Polly&#8217;s Pop sodas include the macaw on their label. I rather like the look, and the bottle cap is fun too. They definitely have a unique look, and I like that it&#8217;s a small brand.</p><p>I almost wish the label had the same metallic look as the bottle cap.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d9b69dc5-0f31-499a-88ba-aa5d8568e395_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8b61f3d9-ba65-4f88-bb4a-58cc27efeeb6_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9f34b4df-06f0-4124-ab43-96a091d607d3_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Polly's Pop Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Polly's Pop Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/330962e4-3bc0-4144-ba7e-5465733c6167_1456x474.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>While it smells alright, the flavor of Polly&#8217;s Pop root beer is rather sharp but strangely watered down. The first gulp had a strong flavor, but I wouldn&#8217;t call it root beer. There&#8217;s not really any caramel or licorice and the carbonization is quite low.</p><p>In general, I would call this fairly bland. This is the first root beer I have had that mentions containing &#8220;Root Beer Syrup&#8221;. On the plus side, they use cane sugar at least.</p><p>I do feel like the flavor comes out a bit better if you let it warm up a little rather than drinking it ice cold. It&#8217;s still not amazing, but it&#8217;s better that way.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg" width="1456" height="650" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:650,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:946041,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.rootbrewreview.com/i/193106520?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!giP0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7dee377e-694a-49da-92cc-75b10dd78d9b_3131x1398.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><h2><strong>The Wrap Up</strong></h2><p>While Polly&#8217;s Pop Root Beer is not my favorite, I enjoy supporting local brands. When beer was banned, Triple XXX continued to thrive. You can <a href="https://www.triplexxxfamilyrestaurant.com/shop/">purchase</a> Triple XXX in bottles, cans, or as a jelly.</p><p>I got mine from a local Hy-Vee store, but you can also purchase Triple XXX online. According to their website, the three X&#8217;s mean that they are a top-tier product. We will see when we taste test this drink!</p><h2><strong>Branding</strong></h2><p>From a branding perspective, they mostly went with red and yellow. I do feel like it is glaring enough to sort of shout out to the casual browser.</p><p>Triple XXX also went with a brown bottle rather than a clear one, which is interesting.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fe0a3545-8b50-40b6-8dcb-1df7efdfabfc_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bc338a50-94f8-4a29-b544-f9c2075c79ad_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1176f4ba-ca45-4128-9326-e318d6e2799d_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/58d77c62-d5cb-4b5c-9746-cdb5c85a0e18_4032x3024.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Triple XXX Root Beer&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Triple XXX Root Beer&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c8cf8ed1-ea2f-4fb1-9e18-101ea4539a9b_1456x1456.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p><h2><strong>Taste and Ingredients</strong></h2><p>When you first take a swig of Triple XXX Root Beer, you will get a strong flavor profile. While the ingredients don&#8217;t mention licorice or wintergreen, I feel like there is a taste of both in this root beer.</p><p>Personally, I don&#8217;t like licorice much, so this isn&#8217;t my favorite root beer right off the bat. On the other hand, if you keep sipping the drink, that flavor seems to mellow a bit. I don&#8217;t really enjoy the aftertaste, though. It reminds me a lot of a diet drink aftertaste.</p><p>The other thing to note about this drink is how flat it is. In fact, I would say it is one of the flattest root beers I&#8217;ve ever had. It&#8217;s also quite smooth.</p><p>As usual with these smaller root brews, this one is caffeine-free and made with pure sugar cane.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a
